From PhysX Wiki
Games with Hardware PhysX acceleration are inсluding physical effects and content, optimized for execution on NVIDIA GPUs and Ageia PPUs (previosly). Hardware acceleration is a feature of PhysX SDK.

Hardware PhysX support can be devided into two types:
- Additional effects - while PhysX effects are enabled, playable framerate can be achieved only when appropriate NVIDIA GPU/PPU is found in the system. CPU execution is not effective, in most cases.
Dynamic particles in Sacred 2: Fallen Angel |
Better explosions in GRAW 2 |
Tearable cloth banners in Mirror's Edge |
However, im most games such extra effects can be switched off, leaving only general physics layer (like rigid body physics and ragdolls), running normally on CPU regardless to GPU manufacturer/PPU presence.
- Additional performance - such games can run normally (30+ fps) with all physics calculated on CPU, but addition of NVIDIA GPU/Ageia PPU will provide performance boost.
Console and mobile PhysX SDK based games are not using hardware accelerated features.
